About The Owner
Jessica Buford, Owner of Shine On Editing, is an enthusiastic advocate for composers and writers getting their work out into the populace. She is a knowledgeable writing and music educator with years of experience and numerous credentials.
In 2007, Jessica earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, with a concentration in Creative Writing, and minors in Music and Political Science from West Virginia University (WVU). Following some years in the workforce, she returned to college, garnering a Master of Arts in The Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESL) and Applied Linguistics from Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) in 2013. After a gap year, she leaned into her lifelong obsession with music, first attaining a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) in 2018, and A Master of Music in Musicology from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2021.
Jessica developed a passion for helping others succeed in writing while in her second year of grad school at WSSU, working for the then Writer’s Block as a professional writing consultant. This led to the penning/publication of her first book, In the Minds of Chameleons in 2014. Through its development, she wondered how frequently people wanted to be able to write and publish, but didn’t know how to ask, or weren’t able to afford the traditional fees incurred during the often-lengthy revision process. After transcribing compositions during and following her tenure at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, she saw the possibility of a company in which her passions for music, writing, and above all, helping others achieve could finally come together.
After working as an independent writing coach for 5 years, this concept became more concrete- the formal organization and online convenience of writing assistance without the labor-exploitative aspects often endemic to EdTech companies. In Summer of 2022, she was accepted into the Nussbaum Center for Entrepreneurship, and Shine on Editing was born.
